DEF Injector Feed Line Heat Shield for Exhaust Thermal Protection

A DEF injector feed line may look like a relatively small part of a diesel aftertreatment system, but its routing can place it within a demanding thermal environment. Exhaust pipes, diesel particulate filters, SCR catalysts and other hot-side components can expose nearby DEF lines to sustained radiant heat, particularly where vehicle packaging leaves only limited clearance between systems.

Modern diesel exhaust aftertreatment assemblies package multiple components into a relatively concentrated area. Depending on vehicle architecture, a Diesel Exhaust Fluid feed line can pass near an exhaust pipe, DPF, SCR catalyst, dosing assembly or other high-temperature surface.

In these areas, the line does not necessarily need to touch the exhaust to experience thermal stress. Radiant energy from the hot surface can continuously heat the surrounding space and raise the temperature of adjacent components.

A Corrugated Heat Shield That Can Follow the Line

The geometry of a DEF feed line is one of the main reasons a conventional straight protective tube may not be suitable.

Routing can include bends, offsets, connection points and limited-clearance sections. A rigid shield that does not follow this geometry can be difficult to package and may interfere with neighboring components.

BSTFLEX uses a corrugated heat shield sleeve construction to provide controlled flexibility along the length of the shield. The corrugations allow the sleeve to bend with the routing rather than requiring the vehicle line to follow the shape of the protective material.

The external aluminum layer faces the surrounding hot environment. Its reflective metallic surface is used primarily to manage radiant heat arriving from nearby exhaust components.

This is important because a DEF line positioned beside a high-temperature exhaust surface may receive substantial thermal radiation even when there is no direct physical contact between the two parts.

Fiberglass Thermal Layer

Beneath the aluminum surface, fiberglass provides the insulating body of the sleeve. The fiberglass layer slows heat transfer through the shield and separates the protected line from the external aluminum facing.

The combination therefore provides a more functional thermal barrier than relying on thin aluminum foil alone:

Thermal conditions around diesel aftertreatment equipment differ from those found in many conventional engine-bay locations.

For this reason, selection should not be based only on a generic material temperature rating.
